In KDE System Settings > Multimedia i played around with the various devices, testing sound output for both the Notifications and Music output but nothing is heard when Xine is the preferred backend. I deferred PulseAudio to the bottom of the device list as PA has been removed on my system, it's a SHOC.... so I don't think the issue here is in AmarokWhen gstreamer is the preferred engine, playback for Music (in Amarok as well) and Notifications works. I haven't tried Gstreamer for MP3 yet.----------------------------------------------I'm pleased to say this looks to be fixed in KDE4.2 / Kubuntu 8.10 - I think it was a buggy/incompatible xine phonon backend.Packages installed:$ aptitude show amarok-kde4Package: amarok-kde4Version: 2.0.1.1-0ubuntu1~ppa1Package: phonon-backend-xineVersion: 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1Package: libphonon4Version: 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1Package: phononVersion: 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1
i know, it's a bug, wait for an update and/or use another player.. Or just remove the evil PulseAudio.
"Phonon is the multimedia API for KDE 4. Phonon was created to allow KDE 4 to be independent of any single multimedia framework such as GStreamer or xine and to provide a stable API for KDE 4's lifetime. It was done to fix problems of frameworks becoming unmaintained, API instability, and to create a simple multimedia API."
